State Officials Battle With Feds Over Money For Newburgh's Tainted Water

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – State environmental officials are calling out the Department of Defense for suggesting it won't reimburse Newburgh and New Windsor for past expenditures associated with the poisoning of its wells and primary water supply, according to the Times Herald-Record.

State officials are demanding more support from the Department of Defense when it comes to helping with Newburgh and New Windsor's contaminated water.

The state has already poured an estimated $25 million into cleaning up the water supplies and estimates say it could grow by another $26 million. The tainted water is the result of releases of a toxic chemical, perfluorooctane sulfonate, or PFOS, at Stewart Air National Guard Base, the Record reported.

The presence of PFOS caused Lake Washington, Newburgh's primary water source, to be closed off in May of Last year, the Record said.
